Going to get this on-line earlier than the last two months!!  April has been a busy month.  I had a wonderful time at the Easter Egg Drop and Scramble on April 11.  Some eggs “survived” and some did not.  But it was a beautiful morning; the kids and their parents had a great time.  Thanks to Mid West One Bank for sponsoring the event and to Dan Appleget of Sigourney Tree Care for dropping the eggs.

The “Coffee with the Mayor” is going well.  A nice group has attended each week.  Some drink coffee with me each week and some come when they can.  Last week we discussed how the City has chosen to use the local option sales tax that we receive.  Nuisance properties has also been a topic of discussion.  They are a problem in every town and ours is no exception.  We are aware of them and will continue to work with the owners toward the rehabilitation or demolition of the buildings.  But each of us needs to make our properties clean.

Twenty-two wonderful and energetic souls worked to Keep Sigourney Beautiful on Sunday, April 26.  We collected 340 lbs of litter and rubbish that accumulated over the winter!!  We couldn’t cover the entire town, so I encourage you to “Adopt your Block” and as you are walking in your neighborhood, pick up the litter that you see.  You will be amazed at how much you collect.  Manor House won the award for the businesses.  They brought five employees to help.  Many thanks to them.  The Baptist Church won the award for the most participants from a church.  Thanks Ione!!  We appreciate the efforts of all.

Now that spring is here and the mowing season has begun, I want to remind you to turn your mowers so the grass clippings don’t blow into the street.  Grass clippings can clog the storm drains and create a blockage in the sewer system.  Sometimes it creates street flooding, but it can also make sewers back up into basements.  No one wants that!!!

Best of Luck to the Sigourney High School Class of 2009.  I look forward to your energy, enthusiasm and commitment in making this community or your new community dynamic and progressive.

May 10-16 is Iowa School Board Recognition Week.  A big thank you to those who are elected in a volunteer effort to support and lead the educational efforts for our young people.  We know the important impact of a high-quality educational system has on the growth and quality of life in our community.  I tip my hat to our board members who are progressive and innovative in their approach with the E-SEAL program, the Project Lead-The-Way, and the exciting Career Academy.

Happy Mother’s Day

Have a great May,

Pat

Purses with Possibilities

Fund Raiser for Memorial Hall

Beginning March 27, bring your gently used or unused handbags to the City Clerk’s office.  You can consign or donate.  If you want to consign, please give name and phone number and the amount you desire for the handbag.  Handbags will be available for purchase on Friday April 6, 10-4, and Saturday April 7, 10-2.  A small handling fee will be added to each consigned item.  All monies received will be given to Memorial Hall.

Spring Clean-up will be held April 13-17 this year.  Please do not put your items on the terrace until late afternoon on the 12th.  This is a month earlier than we have held clean-up.

Keep Sigourney Beautiful will again be active on Sunday April 26 from 1-3.  Litter is always a problem and this is an excellent opportunity for each of us to help clean up our community after winter.  We are only asking for two hours of your help.  If each organization and church would send five or six members to help, we could cover much of the city.  This is a way to help your city without any money and only two hours.  If this day doesn’t work for you or your organization, just call me to arrange for a route and the materials you need, i.e. safety vests, gloves and bags. Only litter from terraces and the edge of streets will be picked up.  Litter on private property will not be picked up.  Home owners and home renters are asked to keep their properties litter free and in good repair.  Keep Sigourney Beautiful is again sponsored by SHEP (Sigourney Healthy Environment Project).  We are always looking for new members.  If you are concerned about the Sigourney and its environment, please join our group.  We meet the last Wednesday evening of the month at 6:30.   Call me for details.
