News from City Hall

I decided to write another issue of this blog. I hope people will read it and give me some feedback-either positive or negative. I know there are people out there who have negative feelings about city government. I wish they would come to a committee meeting or a council meeting and voice those feelings. That way we could get some dialogue going on why things happen the way they do. I am also aware that some of the issues are just not true in any sense. So be careful of what you hear and believe. We get very little attendance at council meetings, and really that is the only way you can see and hear what and why things go on as they do. The minutes that appear in the newspaper are only the motions and votes, not the discussion preceding the vote. The City Council meets at City Hall, 100 North Main Street, the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month at 6:00 p.m.

Angie, the City Clerk and I enjoyed our visit with the local AARP members last Monday morning. They are a small but very interested group in what is going on and ways they can help.

Our quest for Christmas decorations took a turn for the positive after we attended the liquidation auction of Wayne Manufacturing. We were able to purchase the garland for 35 light poles for around the square and three snowflakes. We made contact with a company that makes snowflakes and contracted with them to provide the additional snowflakes we needed. They were made, powder-coated, and are here in Sigourney. Atwood Electric is helping us decide the best way to put lights on the snowflakes. We also purchased at the auction garland for the bandstand which was a bonus. The committee has decided not to fund raise this year, but will wait to show you what we have accomplished and then asked for something additional next year. This should be an annual drive to add to the decorations and to maintain them. The previous ones, the snowman, the Santa, the candle were purchased used in the early to mid 80’s. We were remiss in not adding to them all along.

I always look forward to the annual “Mayors March for Meals” trip. This is a national effort to support Meals on Wheels. I will help Barb deliver the meals this Thursday. I look forward to visiting with people I may don’t see very often.

Congratulations to K’s on the Square. The coffee house/bakery opened last week. They are located on the south side of the square. The food is delicious and the décor is interesting, relaxing and comfortable. Stop in for a cupcake and coffee.

Think Spring! It has to come sometime.

‘Til next time

I am disappointed in this website. I came here looking for interesting articles, conversation and energy. There is nothing of interest, much less optimistic motivation related to progress. Since we moved here in 1996 we have seen 15 businesses go under and nothing to replace them. The taxes are too high and there is nothing to show for them. The street conditions are an embarrassment to the community as well as a hazard. The main contributors to the Square businesses are the State and Federal Government. There are no sports facilities for the youth in this town other than an outdoor swimming pool that is open less than 2 months a year, a few basketball hoops and a few baseball diamonds. And the City Council wonders why the town is shrinking. There’s little here to make people want to stay. They shop out of town, dine out of town and go elsewhere for entertainment. Our young people must drive the highways to go looking for fun. This site is typical of this town. If anyone reads this and wants suggestions and help in accomplishing positive change, I’ll be glad to help.
