News from the Mayor’s Office…

Wow! I just reread my last blog entry – it said how I was planning to write something on the website every week. Needless to say that didn’t happen! Sorry. Things get busy and to tell the truth I just forgot.

So let me update you on the things that are on my mind at the present. We have another public meeting October 23 about what the public wants to see at the new park on North Main. Our desire is to provide new soccer and flag football fields for our budding athletes. Currently, they play on land that we do not own. SADC is kind enough to allow us to play at the Industrial Park. None of the playing fields is level and they all run east and west. So, at times the sun is an issue. I don’t hear complaining, but I would like to get the youngsters into a safer environment. The city purchased the former Golf View East Trailer Park. We have cleared the land and have it seeded. We really do need the moisture to germinate the seeding! The plan is to play at this facility in the fall of 2013. What else would you like to see at this site? I am thinking of it as another city park, similar to Legion Park, but with different amenities. We have received many donations of time, equipment and product from Hammes Bulldozing, Travis Handy, Keokuk Co Implement and STI. Many thanks to these businesses.

Another project created just after the New Year was a committee to help select new Christmas decorations for the downtown area. I heard several complaints about the lack of decorations, but when it came to actually working on a committee to remedy the situation only five people stepped up! The four remaining members have selected snowflakes and pole wrap. We have collected money for these and they will be installed after Veteran’s Day. We are planning a fund raising event for November 16 with a lighting ceremony, music and a chili supper. We hope you can help with your attendance and a monetary gift at the soup supper. The plan is to add decorations each year for the next four to five years. If we collect enough money, the next order will be placed at 50% off. That is a considerable savings. If you would like more information, just call me. We always welcome new committee members.

I am well aware that both of these projects have detractors. According to some, neither is needed. I am sorry they can’t get on board with the ideas. As always, if you have questions, come by City Hall and ask. We are happy to answer your concerns. Don’t believe all the rumors, come find the answer, either by visiting City Hall and/or coming to a City Council meeting. We meet the first and third Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m.

Enough for now - and I promise more to come shortly!!
