July Newsletter
Wow!! July is here!! Remember in January and February when we were counting the days until the cold and snow were gone? That seems so long ago, and here we are primed and prepped for another great holiday celebration.
I can’t thank Ruth Manchester and Jenny Thompson enough for their great guidance, organizational skills and sacrifice in preparing for this year’s city celebration. Now we just need you to participate in some of the activities. There is something for everyone. If you like Bingo, we have it, it you like Four-point Pitch, we have it, if you like to sit and enjoy music, we have it beginning with the Keota Brass on Friday evening and then a talent show on Saturday afternoon ending with a patriotic sing that evening all at the bandstand.
I am looking forward to the First Pet and Doll Parade in many years. Kids and their pets and dolls and bikes decorated in red, white and blue are to line-up at the Christian Church parking lot beginning at 10:30 on Saturday. The parade route is north on Jefferson Street to the Lewis Fountain.
Welcome home to all those reunion attendees. I hope your get-together is a huge success. And welcome to home to those family members who make the annual journey to their ole hometown to help us celebrate and to visit old acquaintances. We appreciate you.
I subscribe to a magazine, “Real Simple”. There are many interesting articles covering a variety of topics. This month it contained an article on “Why I Became an American.” We, as American all our lives, sometimes forget what we have and what we take for granted. We forget how others live. One of the women explained she became an American to “live free of fear”. I can’t imagine what it would be like to live in constant fear. Another said, “to be in a place where greatness is encouraged.” and still another “to escape oppression”. Let us remember how truly great this country is. We have out faults, but be are the “land of the free”, and it is there freedoms that make this country great why so many desire to come here.
Families of service men and women are invited to set up a table in front of the News Review office for people to stop by and write a note to a particular serviceman or woman or to any service personnel deployed. Stop by an write a note. They will be forwarded.
Farmer’s Market has a nice variety of vendors. Now we need customers! Please consider stopping on Tuesday afternoon for fresh produce, baked goods and a sandwich. Selling begins at 4:30.
And don’t forget the Movies in the Park each week. This Friday is Avatar sponsored by the KCSTAAR. Check the Calendar tab at the top to view the schedule.
Now for the bad news! July 1 is the day new laws go into effect. The City of Sigourney has one new ordinance that you should be aware of. On the August water bill you will notice an increase of $3.00 for your sewer charge. The sewer fund is a propriatary fund; we have been spending more on maintenance than the charge was bringing in. Nobody likes to make this increase, but it was necessary. No one likes sewers that don’t work like they should either. If you have questions, call the City Clerk’s office at 622-3080.
